Chronic bronchitis occurs when the lung tissues over produce mucous of phlegm
A person with chronic bronchitis will have a well known “smokers cough” and will cough up mucous on an almost daily basis
Emphysema occurs when large parts of the lungs are destroyed by the chemical inhaled by smoking tobacco
A person with emphysema will be often short of breath and have a lower tolerance for exercise
There are treatments for COPD but the most important step is to stop smoking
Spirometry
Spirometry is a very useful test is assessing lung health. It involves blowing into a machine which can measure the health and efficiency of your lungs. This test is available at our practice and is useful for diagnosing illnesses such as COPD.
